Before Sharpsburg
He studied the law, was admitted to the bar in 1845, and practiced in Yadkinville, N.C. He was the delegate from Yadkin County at the Secession Convention in May 1861. He enrolled in the 38th Regiment and was commissioned 1st Lieutenant, Company B on 1 October 1861. He was elected Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment at the reorganization on 25 April 1862.
On the Campaign
He was in command of the 38th on the Maryland Campaign in the absence of Colonel Hoke, and was wounded in action at Shepherdstown (Boteler's Ford) on 20 September.
The rest of the War
He went to Statesville, NC to recover. While on leave, he was appointed State Solicitor for the 6th District. He resigned his commission on 14 January 1863, and served as Solicitor until 1865.
After the War
He continued his legal and political career in North Carolina. He was a member of the State Senate (1874-75), Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina (1875-76), and US Congressman (1879-83; photo) - for which seat he did not seek reelection. He was appointed (and later elected) Superior Court judge from 1889 until he retired in 1895.
