Before Sharpsburg

In the 1850 US Census [page image - see line 35] , he is listed as age 26 and a teacher living in Marengo County, Alabama with wife Sarah R. (Chapman) Coats, age 20 (m. 10 Jun 1850). In the 1860 Census he was still teaching, living in the town of Shiloh.

He enlisted as Private in Company A [roster] of the 11th Alabama Infantry Regiment at Linden on 11 June 1861, giving his age as 30. He was present at Seven Pines (30 May 62) and wounded at Gaines Mill (27 June). He was away from his unit recovering until again mustering present at Second Manassas in late August.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September and died "in the hands of the enemy" sometime thereafter.
