Before Sharpsburg

His parents came to America from Ireland, probably about 1840. In 1860 Joseph was a 15 year old living in Columbia, SC with his parents and 6 siblings. He enlisted there on 15 March 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company A, Second South Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot through his left heel in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was sent to Fort McHenry in Baltimore and on to Fortress Monroe, VA on 13 October for exchange. He was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital #4 in Richmond, VA on 23 October, furloughed on 5 (or 12) November, and was on furlough or in hospitals in Petersburg and Williamsburg, VA to 30 July 1863. He was again absent, sick, from September to November 1863. He was mortally wounded by a gunshot to his leg on picket duty at Petersburg, VA about 2 June and died on 20 June 1864.
