Before Sharpsburg

He graduated from the USMA in 1854 served in 1st US Cavalry on frontier duty and was aide to R E Lee when John Brown's men fought at Harpers Ferry (1859). In May 1861 he resigned his US Army commission and was made LCol. of VA infantry. In July he was appointed Colonel of the 1st Virginia Cavalry Regiment. He was at First Manassas. In September 1861 he was appointed Brigadier General, was on the Peninsula campaign, rode around McClellan's army, and fought at the Seven Days. In July 1862 he was appointed Major General with command of all cavalry in the Army of Northern Virginia (ANV). He was on the Second Manassas campaign, and at Catlett's Station and Groveton.

He commanded the ANV Cavalry Division.

The rest of the War

He saw further service at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville (where he temporarily commanded II Corps), at Brandy Station, on the Gettysburg campaign, and at Yellow Tavern where he was killed.
