Before Antietam

He left school before graduating to enlist in August 1862, and enrolled as 2nd Lieutenant in Company E, 155th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on September 2, 1862 at the formal organization of the Regiment.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Captain on February 26, 1864. Honored by brevet to Major, March 29, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious service in the battle of Quaker Road, VA". Absent, on detached service, on staff duty, at muster out in June 1865.

After the War

He joined his father's firm, the Jones & Laughlin Steel Company, Pittsburg, being vice-chair of the Board until his retirement in 1900. By the time of his death he was also president of the Keystone National Bank, and remained a director of Jones & Laughlin.
