Before Antietam
He was a teller at the Pittsburgh Trust Company until 1858, when he moved to St Louis, MO. He went to Chattanooga, TN in early 1860. He returned to Pittsburg in March 1861 and served as a Private in Company K, 12th Pennsylvania Infantry for 3 months' service from April 1861. He enrolled as Captain in Company C, 155th Pennsylvania Infantry on 2 September 1862, and was promoted Major of the Regiment to date from the same day.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 31 December 1862 and to Colonel on 22 July 1863. He resigned his commission on 30 August 1863.
After the War
He lived in Franklin, PA, was briefly a teller at the First National Bank, then was in the business of oil production and refining.
