Federal Army service summary, pre-War:
Appointed to the US Military Academy at West Point (along with Horace Randal, the first from Texas) in 1849, graduated in 1853 (Cullum #1627);
Appointed Brevet 2nd Lieutenant, 7th US Infantry on 1 July 1853;
2nd Lieutenant, 1st US Cavalry Regiment, 3 Mar 1855;
Promoted 1st Lieutenant on 16 Jan 1857;
Served as Regimental Quartermaster 15 Apr 1858 to 3 May 1861;
Promoted Captain, 3 May 1861;
His Regiment renamed 4th US Cavalry, August 1861.

He was in command of the Headquarters Escort (cavalry), Army of the Potomac on the Maryland Campaign. Also Commanding Officer of Company E, 4th US Cavalry, in that HQ Escort.

He saw action in the Western Theater - Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama - for the War's duration. He was brevetted Major 10 July 1863 for gallant and meritorious service in the cavalry action at Franklin, Tennessee, and Lieutenant Colonel 25 Sept 1863 for gallant and meritorious service in the action near Chickamauga, Georgia.

He remained in the post-War Regular Army, and was promoted to Major, 3rd US Cavalry on 28 July 1866. He was assigned to command Ft. Brown, Texas, then to Ft. Larned, Kansas in January 1867. He died there of Phthisis Feutmomlis (possibly a mis-transcription of phthisis pulmonalis, another name for tuberculosis) in May of that year at age 34, and was buried in the Post Cemetery. He was reinterred along with the other remains from that spot to Ft. Leavenworth, probably in 1873.
