Before Sharpsburg
From Abbeville, he enlisted in Company A, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 5 December 1861 at Columbia, SC at age 19. He was Corporal by August 1862.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action on 14 September 1862 at Fox's Gap.
The rest of the War
Held at Fort Delaware, he was sent to Aikens Landing, VA and exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was wounded, in the arm, in action at Chickamauga, GA on 20 September 1863. He was at the Fairgrounds Hospital, Atlanta, GA. He was again wounded, severely, in the abdomen, in action in the Wilderness, VA on 6 May 1864. He was in the Episcopal Hospital, Williamsburg, VA on 12 June, and transferred to the General Hospital in Kittrell, NC on 29 June 1864. He was paroled at Greensboro, NC.
