Before Sharpsburg

He graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1840, had a very successful practice in Laurens, and may have retired before the War. He also made several safaris to Africa. He was commissioned Captain, Company D, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 1 December 1861 at age 44. Reelected Captain on 28 April 1862 at the reorganization.

On the Campaign

Commanded the Battalion as senior officer present at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

The rest of the War

He was promoted Major to date from 15 September 1862, but resigned for illness - rheumatism - in April 1863.

After the War

He moved to near Williston, Marion County, FL in 1865 or 1866, and planted pecans and oranges.
