Before Sharpsburg
Son of a wealthy planter, he had attended Furman University, Greenville, SC in 1853, and was a freshman at South Carolina College in 1859. In 1860 he was a 17 year old student living at the College in Columbia, SC. He enlisted in Company B, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 8 April 1862 at Adams Run, SC.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on 14 September 1862.

His father was Colonel James Henderson Irby (1793-1860) - who was also a lawyer, State legislator (1826-51) and Lieutenant Governor (1852-54).
