Before Sharpsburg
He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company D, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 1 December 1861 at Columbia, SC. He was elected First Lieutenant on 30 April 1862.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action at Fox's Gap on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
Held at Fort Delaware, he was sent to Aikens Landing, VA and exchanged on 6 October 1862. He was severely wounded in the left foot, fracturing metatarsal bone and two toes, in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863. He was admitted to the General Hospital #4, Richmond, VA on 25 July and furloughed 29 July for 40 days. He was in the General Hospital, Columbia, SC in October 1863 and returned to duty in June 1864, but was deemed unfit for field service. He was transferred to the Invalid Corps 24 March 1865.
