Daniel Byrd Miller

A married 35 year old lawyer from Columbia, he had been Clerk of the Columbia City Council until he enrolled as Captain, Company A (the Richland Rifles) 22 April 1861 on Morris Island, SC, serving there and on Sullivan's Island. His Company was transferred to Virginia after Sumter and was assigned to the First Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers. At the expiration of their 6-month term, he was commissioned Captain, Company F, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 30 January 1862 at at Columbia, SC. He was re-elected Captain at the reorganization of April 1862.

He commanded the Battalion after Lieutenant Colonel James' death and Major Rice's wounding at Fox's Gap on 14 September 1862, and was himself captured there.

Held at Fort Delaware, he was sent to Aikens Landing, VA and exchanged on 6 October 1862. He was on recruiting duty in Columbia in January and appointed Major on 27 April 1863. He was severely wounded in the chest, shoulder, both arms, and ankle in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA and refused to have his leg amputated. He was furloughed home and eventually recovered use of his leg. He resigned his commission 5 December 1864 after having been elected Clerk of Court, Richland District, SC.

He served in that office to 1880. He died after a paralytic stroke in 1885.
