Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted in Company D, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 1 December 1861 at Columbia, SC at age 17. He was appointed Corporal 15 February, was on detached duty as an artillerist in April, and was promoted Sergeant on 1 June 1862.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Fox's Gap while "refusing to surrender the colors" on 14 September 1862, not yet 18 years old.
