An unmarried 23 year old, he enlisted in Company D, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 1 December 1861 at Columbia, SC.

On the Campaign

He was elected 2nd Lieutenant on 15 September 1762.

The rest of the War

He was suspended from command on 10 January 1863 by a board of examiners, but promoted to First Lieutenant on 1 March 1863. He was ill from November 1863 for 5 months, returning to duty returning in March or April 1864. He was killed in action at Spotsylvania, VA on 8 May 1864.
