William M. Curtis

A 20 year old bootmaker from Randolph, he enlisted on 16 April 1861 in Company C, 4th Massachusetts Infantry, for 3 months. He mustered out 22 July in Boston Harbor. He enlisted again, in Company F, 19th Massachusetts Infantry on 25 March 1862. He was reported missing in action having been captured at Glendale, VA on 30 June 1862, and was back with his Company on 6 August.

He was wounded in the neck in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

He was appointed Sergeant, date not given, then Sergeant Major of the Regiment, on 2 April 1863. He reenlisted 20 December 1863, then was appointed 1st Lieutenant 23 December (to date from 24 November). He was appointed Adjutant on 13 March 1864, having been Acting since January 1864. He was captured, with most of his Regiment near Petersburg, VA on 22 June 1864, and held at camps in Macon, GA and Columbia, SC. He was paroled (date not given), but still listed as absent, a prisoner, into January 1865. He was commissioned Captain to date from 8 October 1864, but did not muster at that rank. He was discharged as First Lieutenant and Adjutant of the Regiment on 12 March 1865.
