Before Antietam

An 18 year old shoemaker in Gloucester, he enlisted on 1 December 1861 in Company H, 19th Massachusetts Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the neck in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He reenlisted on 20 December 1863, was assigned to Company B, and was wounded again, in the left forearm in action at Cold Harbor, VA on 3 June 1864. He was captured in action at Ream's Station, VA on 25 August 1864, held at Libby Prison, Richmond, VA, and exchanged 26 November 1864. He was promoted to Corporal, date not given, and mustered out with his Company on 30 June 1865.
