Age 27, he enlisted at New York City to serve three years, and mustered in as Sergeant, Company B, 69th New York Infantry on 17 September 1861. He was promoted to First Sergeant on 8 August 1862.

He was slightly wounded in the arm at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He mustered out at the consolidation of 12 June 1863.
