Howell Cobb

Before the war he was a lawyer, US Congressman, Speaker of the House, Governor of Georgia (1851-54), and President Buchanan's Secretary of the Treasury (1857-60). He was a Confederate Congressman until July 1861, when he was commissioned Colonel of the 16th Georgia Infantry. In February 1862 he was appointed Brigadier General, CSA and commanded a brigade in McLaws' Division in the Peninsula Campaign and at the Seven Days.

He commanded his brigade at Harpers Ferry on 13 September 1862 and at Crampton's Gap (South Mountain) on the 14th, but was not personally present with the brigade again until after the action at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

In September 1863 he was promoted to Major General in command of the District of Georgia and Florida.

He returned to his law practice.
