Before Sharpsburg
He came to Bienville Parish, LA with his family in about 1850. On 12 March 1862, by then a 21 year old farmer in Brush Valley, LA he enlisted there and mustered as a Private in Company H, 9th Louisiana Infantry. He was appointed 4th Sergeant on 15 April and was with his company in battles at Cedar Mountain on 9 August, 2nd Manassas 28-30 August, and at Harpers Ferry on 15 September.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

About two months before he enlisted, in January 1862, he married Armenia A. Prothro (1841-1891) at her birthplace, Lexington, SC. She bore their daughter Annie Tucker Staley Raborn (1862-1926) three days after Reuben was killed.
