Before Sharpsburg
He was a lawyer and writer and served in the Confederate Congress before commissioning as Colonel of Cobb's (GA) Legion in August 1861. He was at the Seven Days and Second Manassas in 1862.
On the Campaign
He was not present with the Legion on the Maryland Campaign, but was home in Georgia on leave.
The rest of the War
In November 1862 he was appointed to command of Cobb's Brigade/McLaws' Division and promoted on Gen Lee's recommendation to Brigadier General, but was killed in December at Fredericksburg.
