Before Sharpsburg

A 23 year old planter, he enlisted as 2nd Sergeant, Company F, 2nd Mississippi Infantry, date not given. He was appointed Orderly (First) Sergeant on 1 June 1861 and elected First Lieutenant on 11 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was furloughed for 30 days and returned to duty. He was wounded again, at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and captured there on 5 July. He was a prisoner at Johnson's Island, OH until paroled and forwarded to Point Lookout, MD on 14 March 1865.

He may be the James W. Saunders (1837-1925), admitted as a patient to the Western State Mental Hospital, Fort Supply, Woodward County, Oklahoma before 1910 and buried at the cemetery there.
