Before Antietam
The orginal Battery L, 1st New York Light Artillery, was raised by John A. Reynolds of Rochester, New York, in September of 1861.
On the Campaign
In command of Battery L, New York Light Artillery, part of the 1st Division of I Corps' Artillery.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Major on 13 March 1863, and eventually became Colonel and Chief of Artillery of the 20th Corps under Major General William Sherman. When he left the Battery, his brother Gilbert succeeded him as Captain, serving as such until 1 July 1863, when he was wounded at Gettysburg.
After the War
He was elected Dept of NY Commander of the GAR (veterans) in 1883.
