He enlisted and mustered on 1 May 1861 as Quartermaster Sergeant of the 9th Pennsylvania Reserves. He was transferred to Company A on 30 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds, place not given.

His service from Bates1 as E.P. Darlington. His gravesite is on Findagrave.

In a letter home to his wife after 2nd Bull Run, Brigadier General Alexander Hayes mentioned Darlington, calling him a Lieutenant. There is no other documentation for a commission.
