By then a resident of Pittsburgh, he mustered into service as Private, Company D, 9th Pennsylvania Reserves on 3 May 1861.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

He married Eva Mary Gundling (1833-1899) and they had two children. She received widow and minor Federal pensions beginning in April 1863. His great-grandson PFC John Otto Fallenstein (b. 1916) was also killed in battle - during the fight for the Philippines in February 1945. He is buried in the Manila American Cemetery.
