Before Antietam

A 24 year old school teacher in Luzerne County, he mustered into service as First Lieutenant, Company K, 81st Pennsylvania Infantry on 27 October 1861 in Eckly, PA.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot in the back and spine in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at a hospital at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg (although the bullet was not removed until 1868). He was promoted to Captain on 25 October 1862 but discharged for disability on 20 June 1863 in Washington, DC.

After the War

He was in the flour, feed, and lumber businesses in Drums and Wilkes-Barre, was Luzerne County Commissioner 1885-87, and was Secretary of the Wyoming Valley Trust Company at his death at age 75.
