Federal (USV)

Private

William Thomas Daller

(1833 - 1904)

Home State: Pennsylvania

Branch of Service: Infantry

Unit: 124th Pennsylvania Infantry

Before Antietam

Age 29, from East Caln Township, Chester County, he enlisted on 6 August 1862 in West Chester, and mustered as Captain of Company F, 124th Pennsylvania Infantry on 11 August in Harrisburg.

On the Campaign

In the Miller cornfield at Antietam on 17 September 1862, Sergeant Potts of his Company later recalled:

The company was lying down, and two of us started out in front to find out where the balls were coming from; we found that some bushes along a ridge of rocks were full of Rebels, and they hit us both. I think it was "Bill" Dollar [sic] that was with me, and they hit him on a heavy bowie knife that I had given him to carry for me - it was bent nearly double, and, no doubt, saved his life. They hit me on the instep as my foot was raised to take a step: "Bill" dropped his musket and started for the company on a limp, holding his side.

The rest of the War

He mustered out with his Company on 16 May 1863.

After the War

In 1880 he was working in a Chester County rolling mill. He filed for and was awarded a federal veteran's invalid pension in 1890.
