Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted as Private in Company K, 9th South Carolina Infantry in April 1861, then reenlisted and mustered as Sergeant, Company F, Palmetto Sharpshooters in May 1862. He was wounded in the actions at Gaines' Mill and Frazier's Farm, VA in June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the arm in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He lost his left hand to amputation.

After the War

He was elected tax collector of Edgefield County in 1863, and was County Treasurer from 1868-78 and 1898-1900. He was in the mercantile business in Leesville, SC for 25 years.
