Before Sharpsburg

Pre-War he was a lawyer and politician. He had Army service in the Mexican War and was US Congressman (1852). In May 1861 he was Col. of 6th GA and led them on the Peninsula and Seven Days campaigns, and at South Mountain.

On the Campaign

He led Colquitt's Brigade in D.H. Hill's Division. He was appointed Brigadier General on 17 September, after the battle, to rank from 1 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He commanded his Brigade at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Olustee. His Brigade was part of Hoke's Division at Drewry's Bluff and Petersburg. He surrendered in North Carolina in May 1865.

After the War

Lawyer, farmer, Governor of Georgia (1876), and US Senator (1882) - in which office he was serving at his death in 1894.
