Age 19, from the Spartanburg District, he enlisted as Private, Company E, 18th South Carolina Infantry about 1 February 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

After the War

By 1880 and to at least 1900 he was a farmer at Woodruff, Spartanburg County. In 1920 he was farming in Scuffletown, Laurens County.

He married Louisa Catherine Cheek (1829-1902) and they had 2 children. He married again, the widow Julia Ann Rhodes Workman (1858-1935), a maternal cousin - daughter of his uncle Benjamin Rhodes and his second wife, Mary Ann Cheek (related to Madison's first wife?).
