An unmarried 28 year old laborer in Mobile, he enlisted there as Private, Company E, 8th Alabama Infantry on 6 May 1861.
On the Campaign
At Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862
Sergeant J. P. Harris, bearing the flag, was soon wounded. Corporal [sic] Thomas Ryan of Company E immediately took the colors and was shortly afterwards mortally wounded.
