Before Sharpsburg
Age 19, from Chowan County, he enlisted as Private, Company A, First North Carolina Infantry on 18 May 1861 in Edenton.
On the Campaign
He was wounded by a gunshot to his left shoulder in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and captured.
The rest of the War
He was held at Fort McHenry until paroled on October 17 and transferred on the 18th to Fortress Monroe, VA. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on the 23rd, officially exchanged on 10 November 1862, and transferred to a hospital in Goldsboro, NC on 3 April 1863. He was afterwards absent in hospitals and on furlough due to his wound, and was listed as "permanently disabled" by August 1863. He was captured and paroled at Greensboro on 10 May 1865.
