Before Antietam
Age 22, from Monroe County, MI, he enlisted on 20 June 1861 in Adrian as Private, Company A, 4th Michigan Infantry. He was discharged for disability on 8 January 1862 at Miner's Hill, VA outside Washington, DC. On 27 May 1862 he enrolled as 2nd Lieutenant in the new 17th Michigan Infantry, his commission dated 17 June.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded in the left thigh and knee in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was treated at the Locust Spring hospital on the Geeting Farm near Keedysville, MD and then admitted to US Army General Hospital #3 (in Bonsall's Academy) in Frederick, MD on 1 October 1862. His leg was amputated but he died of wounds there on 16 October 1862.
