Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a wealthy physician (and farmer?) at La Grange in Troup County, GA. He was elected Captain of Company K, 13th Georgia Infantry on its organization on 8 July 1861 at Griffin, GA. He was acting Surgeon of the regiment in April and May 1862.
On the Campaign
He commanded the Regiment as senior officer present for duty on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg until he was seriously wounded there.
The rest of the War
He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 18 October then was furloughed home to recover from December 1862 to at least April 1863. He was promoted to Major in March 1863 (to date from 13 December 1862). He was elected to the Georgia state legislature in November 1863 and resigned his commission due to disability from his Sharpsburg wound on 1 March 1864. He was a State Representative for Troup County to 1865.
After the War
By December 1865 he was again a practicing physician in La Grange, GA. He moved to Sherman County, TX in 1877.
