Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was 20 years old and lived with 5 grown siblings and his widowed mother in The Plains, Fauquier County, VA. He enlisted as a Private in Company C, 33rd Virginia Infantry on 5 April 1862 at Camp Strickler near New Market, VA, and transferred to Company B on 1 May.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was absent, recovering, through at least December 1862, but returned to duty in 1863. He was with his Company to at least April 1864, the latest record in his military file.
After the War
By 1880 he was farming in Terra Alta, Preston County, WV. In 1900 he was a farmer in Woodstock, Shenandoah County, VA, and had retired there by 1910, living with daughter Effie and her family.
