Lyman James Jackson

He was a lawyer "of fair talents" from Perry County, Ohio. From April through August 1861 he was Captain, Company E, 17th Ohio Infantry, a 90 day unit. He then raised and was Captain of Company G in the 31st Ohio Infantry. In January 1862, at about 27 years of age, he was appointed Major of the Eleventh from outside the Regiment. He had requested an appointment to field rank from the Governor, suggesting the 62nd Ohio Regiment.

By March, "Colonel Charles A. DeVilliers of their regiment had been tried by court martial and, although the result had not been published, circumstances indicated his dismissal." Lieutenant Colonel Coleman then had command.

As the next senior man, Major Jackson took command of the Regiment after Lieutenant Colonel Coleman was mortally wounded in action at the lower bridge at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

He resigned his commission in the 11th Ohio Infantry on 1 October 1862. In May 1864 he was made Colonel of the new 159th Ohio on its organization - and mustered with them for 100 days service.

By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was again a lawyer in New Lexington, Perry County, OH. He was Perry County delegate to the Ohio State Constitutional Convention of 1873.

He married Mary E Taggart (1837-1891) in February 1863 and they had 3 children.
