Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 39 year old laborer living near his Taylor in-laws at Bennettsville in the Marlboro District, SC. He enlisted on 17 October 1861 as a Private in Captain R.C. Emanuel's Company, Hatch's Battalion Coast Rangers, who became Company G, 23rd South Carolina Infantry in November 1861.
On the Campaign
He died in Maryland on 9 (or 10) September 1862. He may have been wounded and died of that cause, but his military record does not specify.
The rest of the War
His widow Susan filed for his final pay of $47.30 in January 1863.
