Before Antietam

He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd United States Cavalry on 30 November 1861, was on the Peninsular Campaign of 1862, and was promoted 1st Lieutenant on 25 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was acting regimental Adjutant when he was captured at Winchester, VA on 19 September 1864. He was in prisons at Richmond and Danville, VA and Salisbury, NC to March 1865.

He was honored by brevets for his service at Todd's Tavern, VA 6 May 1864 (Captain), Winchester, 19 September 1864 (Major), and for "gallant and meritorious service" during the War on 13 March 1865 (Colonel). He was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel (Volunteers) of the 214th Pennsylvania Infantry on 6 April 1865 (Colonel D.B. McKibbin) and mustered out of volunteer service with that Regiment in March 1866.

After the War

He was promoted to Captain in the 2nd US Cavalry on 28 July 1866, but resigned his commission on 17 November of that year.

By 1880 he was a mantel manufacturer in Philadelphia, PA and was a broker there in 1900.
