Before Antietam
From Media, where his father was a business owner and banker, he entered service with the 124th on 12 August 1862 as 1st Lieutenant, Company D ("Gideon's Band"), and was promoted to Major of the Regiment 16 August 1862. He had been previously on Gen. Dana's staff.
On the Campaign
He assumed command of the regiment after Colonel Hawley was wounded in the Miller Cornfield early on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
The rest of the War
He mustered out with the Regiment on 17 May 1863.
After the War
By 1877 he was a member of the Rose Tree Club, Philadelphia, and it's Fox Hunting Club in 1881.
