Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 33 year old farmer at Gibson in Glascock County, GA. His 39 year old wife Elizabeth owned 5 slaves. He enlisted at Grahamville, GA on 5 May 1862 as a Private in Company A, 48th Georgia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded, bruised in the shoulder, in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital #5 in Richmond on 27 September and returned to duty on 12 October, but he died of typhoid fever in camp near Guinea Station, VA on 28 February 1863. His widow applied for his final pay in August 1863.

He's the older of 2 John Marshes in Company A, both wounded at Sharpsburg. They are distinguished by "Jr." and "Sr." in the military records - probably due to their age difference, not because father and son.
