He enlisted at Sandersville, Washington County, GA as a Private in Company C, 49th Georgia Infantry on 4 March 1862 and transferred to Company A, 48th Georgia Infantry on 2 April.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the chest in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was wounded again, at Gettysburg, PA on 2 Juy 1863, at Spotsylvania, VA on 10 May 1864, Hatcher's Run, VA on 6 February 1865, and at Petersburg, VA on 2 April. He was captured in a Richmond, VA hospital on 3 April, paroled on 15 May, and released on 18 May 1865.

His service from Henderson,1 source also of his birth year, and his Compiled Service Records,2 online from fold3; he's listed as Wiley G. Salmons with the 49th Infantry. He's also on a Sharpsburg casualty list in the Richmond (VA) Enquirer of 17 October 1862.
He's listed in his service records as Wiley G Sammons, Sr. to distinguish him from a younger soldier with the same name in Company A. They were not father and son.
