Before Sharpsburg

A 25 year old farmer, he enrolled at Louisville in Jefferson County, GA on 4 March 1862 and mustered as 2nd Lieutenant of Company E, 48th Georgia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was severely wounded by a gunshot to his right shoulder in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 25 October and furloughed for 60 days on the 28 October. He was absent on detached service from March 1863 to at least June 1863, even so, he was promoted to First Lieutenant on 3 May 1863 and to Captain on 2 July 1863. He resigned his commission for disability from his Sharpsburg wound and was retired to the Invalid Corps on 30 November 1863. He was again admitted to a hospital in Richmond on 21 November 1863 due to his wound and "returned to duty" on 2 January 1864. He was paroled at Augusta, GA on 24 May 1865.
