Before Sharpsburg

Son of an Irish-born brick and stone mason, in 1860 he was a 17 year old living with his father and 3 brothers at Marion in Twiggs County, GA; his father owned 4 slaves. He enlisted there on 4 March 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company G, 48th Georgia Infantry. He was appointed a Musician on 12 August.

On the Campaign

He was "severely" wounded in the hip and thigh in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was detailed to the brigade band by August 1863 and was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1900 he was a farmer in Twiggs County. In 1910 he was a salesman in a drug store in Pulaski County.

He married Elizabeth Bell King (1852-1870) and they had a son James. He married again, Martha Jane Long (1851-1916) in August 1871 and they had 9 more.

His brothers Patrick (b. Ireland 1835) and Thomas (1845-1907) were also in Company G of the 48th; Patrick died of an infection in Lynchburg, VA in December 1862, Thomas enlisted in 1864.
