Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 21 year old miller living with brother Jordan, sister Arminda, and (relative?) Joseph Sutton at Ohoopee in Emanuel County, GA. He enlisted at Swainsboro, GA on 4 March 1862 and mustered as First Sergeant of Company H, 48th Georgia Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was slightly wounded in the arm in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was in a hospital in Richmond, VA by 26 September and returned to duty on 31 October 1862. He was wounded again, mortally, at the Crater near Petersburg, VA on 30 July 1864 and died there on 2 August 1864.
His father Abner filed for his final pay in October 1864.

His brother Jordan Mack Sutton (b. 1833), also in Company H of the 48th Infantry, was killed at Gettysburg, PA in July 1863.
