Age 20, he enlisted on 20 July 1861 at Fort Johnson, SC and mustered as a Private in Company G (later E), First South Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

By then in Company A, he was mortally wounded by a gunshot to his upper left thigh which cut his femoral artery, and he died "in a few moments" on the field at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
