He was probably a student at South Carolina College to 1858, but not a graduate. Son of a wealthy physician and planter Henry Harrison Clarke (1813-1863), and going by Caleb, in 1860 he was a 21 year old living with his parents, 4 siblings, and 161 slaves in the Fairfield District, SC. He enrolled in Company C, 15th South Carolina Infantry by May 1862 and may have been appointed Lieutenant.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
