Before Sharpsburg

Age 21, he enlisted at Lancaster Court House, SC on 8 April 1861, and mustered on 22 May as a Private in Company H, 2nd South Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot to his left side and forearm in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to US Army General Hospital #5 in Frederick, MD on 15 October, sent to Fort McHenry in Baltimore the next day, paroled there, and transferred to Fortress Monroe, VA on 18 October for exchange. He was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital #4 in Richmond, VA on 23 October and furloughed home for 60 days on 2 November. He was back in a Richmond hospital in April 1863 and again furloughed, with no later military. record.
