Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was an 18 year old living with his parents and 5 younger siblings on their small farm at Rock Mills in Randolph County, AL. He enlisted in Montgomery, AL on 19 June 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company I of the 13th Alabama Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was with his company in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and was wounded by a gunshot at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 27 September and returned to duty on 29 October 1862. He was in action again by October 1863 and was wounded again, by a gunshot to his hand, at Hanover Junction, VA on 23 May 1864. He was afterward absent in hospitals, on furlough, or on detail to at least October 1864. He was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
After the War
In 1870 he was back at Rock Mill, AL farming and lived next door to his parents there. By 1880 he was a mechanic at Franklin in Heard County, GA. In 1910 he was retired and lived with his oldest child, daughter Mary Ella, and her family at Glen Loch, GA.

He married Lucinda E Hamilton (1845-1882) in November 1865 and they had 5 children.
