Before Antietam
From a long line of Goulds of Stoneham, he was an 1849 graduate of Norwich University, a military college in Vermont.1 When War broke out he was a civil engineer, and joined the 13th Massachusetts Infantry, initially a drillmaster (probably from his experience as a cadet at Norwich) and Captain, Company G, being appointed Major when the unit was mustered into Federal service on 16 July 1861.1,2.
On the Campaign
He was in command of the 13th on the Maryland Campaign.
The rest of the War
He was with the 13th in action at Gettysburg, then, on 21 April 1864, mustered out of the 13th and was appointed Colonel of the newly formed 59th Massachusetts Infantry.1 Joining the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 9th Corps, they saw service on the Wilderness Campaign, Spottsylvania , and Cold Harbor (May-June 64), where Gould on two occasions commanded the brigade.3,4 He was mortally wounded in action on 30 July 64 at the Crater, near Petersburg, suffering "a compound fracture of the left knee joint from a minie ball".1
