Before Antietam
In 1860 he was a 30 year old machinist in Torrington, CT. He enlisted on 23 May 1861, and was promoted to Major from Captain, Company I, First Connecticut Heavy Artillery in June 1862. He did not muster at that rank, but was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 14th Infantry when it was organized at Hartford on 23 August 1862, less than one month before the battle of Antietam.
On the Campaign
He was in command of the Regiment in Maryland as senior officer; Colonel Morris in command of the Brigade.
The rest of the War
He was seriously wounded in the neck at Fredericksburg, VA on 13 December 1862, and was discharged for disability on 20 April 1863.
After the War
By 1870 he was a "mercantile agent" living with his 17 year old son Frank in Springfield, MA.
