Before Antietam
In 1860 he was a 22 year old merchant at Chelsea in Washtenaw County, MI. He mustered as Sergeant, Company D, 1st Michigan Infantry on 1 May 1861 for three months' service. He was commissioned First Lieutenant, Company F of the new three-year regiment on 17 August 1861 and promoted to Captain of Company G on 22 April 1862.
On the Campaign
He was in command of the regiment as senior officer present at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was dismissed from the service on 20 April 1863.
